The quarries are partially integrated in the Madeira Natural Park.
At the geology level, there is a predominance of refill limestones, reddish-brown tufts and clusters, as well as marine fossils (lameligills, gastropods, equines and crustaceans).
It is noteworthy the presence of species from the Laurissilva Forest – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – such as laurel (Laurus novocanariensis), vinhático (Persea indica), sanguinho (Rhamnus glandulosa), serra uveira (Vaccinium padifolium), folhado (Clethra bórea), pau branco (Picconia excelsa) and beech of the islands (My ricarica).
This area is visited by species of avifauna that are endemic to Madeira, such as the Trocaz Pigeon (Columba trocaz), the finch (Fringilla coelebs madeirensis) and the bisbis (Regullus ignicapillus madeirensis).
